What Is Happening Now

In regards to community activities, outside the County Board of Education, I am privileged to be:

Serving as a Board member of the California Schools VEBA (Voluntary Employee Benefits Association), a state charted Trust with over $400 million in revenue and disbursement. VEBA serves over 80,000 education employees and their dependents, working to moderate healthcare costs and related benefits for the various member school districts.

Serving as a member of the Legislative Committee of the California County Boards of Education, which  monitors and provides analysis of proposed laws that impact the educational process in our schools throughout the state.

Serving as a member of the California Health Care Coalition, a state-wide professional association seeking to develop collaborative efforts to improve the safety, appropriateness, and price of health care services to all Californians.

Recognizing the need to keep up my own education, during my first term I have completed the 2 year
Masters in Governance program, provided by the California School Boards Association, and also completed the course for Certified Industrial Hygiene Manager, from Columbia Southern University, Alabama.

Future
Communication is a vital skill that is often overlooked in a system as large as the Board of Education. I hope to develop a method of improving the communication among the Board members and the Superintendent; among the Board members and the staff; and among the Board members and the local school districts, to which we are ultimately responsible.

Leadership is likewise frequently discussed, but rarely seen. I will work closely with the superintendent and the other members of the Board of Education to lead the students and faculty of our schools into the future of education. We need to explore a variety of options to ensure our children have the BEST education possible. Regardless if the student studies a trade or prepares for college, they deserve nothing less.

Fiscal Accountability is an absolute requirement today. I want to ensure that our schools are doing everything they can to maintain and improve the education process for our students. At the same time, there is the obligation to the taxpayers, to let them know that their investment is being spent wisely. This may mean more inter-dependence than independence as schools and school districts look to each other for support, which may involve the development of consortiums to save money.

Community Involvement is something that I have been involved in for many years, and hope to maintain and develop while on the Board. I want our students to know that the community they live in believes in them and supports their learning. I will work with companies and unions who want to take a strong interest in the workforce of tomorrow by developing a mentoring program today, so students can get a realistic idea of what to expect in a given trade or profession.

With your help and support, I believe in four years we will look back and see all these accomplishments reached, and hopefully surpassed.

I wrote these words during my first campaign, and I am proud to say I have accomplished these goals. Working together, the County Board of Education will continue to support these and other priorities that enhance the educational programs for our children.
